Information was shared using secret codes, messages, and symbols in quilts during the time of the Civil War. These quilts helped enslaved people escape to freedom as part of the Underground Railroad. This presentation is based on the book “Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story Of Quilts and the Underground Railroad” by Jacqueline Tobin and Raymond Dobard. Quilts will be on display and there will be time for questions. 

Quilts have been a part of American history since our nation was formed. This program kicks off one of several that will culminate in a community quilt!

About the presenter:
Georgia Payne has been sewing most of her life with the last 15 years focused on quilting. She learned to sew at the age of 7 and was taught by her mother who was a professional seamstress. She teaches quilting workshops and gives many of her quilts away to charities. Georgia has a Master's Degree in Social Work and lives in Washington.
