- **Event Description**: Please join the West Baton Rouge Museum on Friday, January 16, 2026 from 6 - 8 PM for Historical Happy Hour. This month’s Happy Hour will feature an opening reception for the exhibit, Gone But Not Forgotten: Black Cemeteries of West Baton Rouge and music performed by St. Mark Baptist Church Choir and Jazz and Blues musician, Leroy Toussaint.
St. Mark Baptist Church Choir was established in 1932, just fifty-five years after the church was organized in 1877. Still going strong, the choir’s motto is. “When praise goes up, blessings do come down.” This group’s s traditional singing of spirituals is not to be missed.
Leroy Toussaint was born and raised in New Roads. He started playing music at the age of 8. He has played for just about all the churches in Pointe Coupee Parish and has toured with Kenny Neal traveling from the east coast to the west coast. He’s also had the pleasure of playing in Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, Netherlands, Ireland and Romania just to name a few.
Gone But Not Forgotten: Black Cemeteries of West Baton Rouge will be on display January 10 – March 8, 2026. This exhibit examines the historic lost burial grounds of enslaved Black people across the parish as well as those cemeteries that are in danger of becoming lost to Mother Nature or land development. Many of these were started by Black Churches or Benevolent Societies in the latter part of the 19th century. In addition to live music and refreshments at the opening reception, visitors will be able to enjoy meeting guest curator, genealogist, cemetery mapper, and founder of the nonprofit, Westside Cemetery Preservation, Debbie Martin who has worked on this project for almost a decade. Also, on hand will be cinemaphotographer Jazz Bishop who documented the sites photographically and associate professor in the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture at Louisiana State University, Dr. Brendan Harmon who documented the project through laser scanning, drones, and 3D printing of these endangered sites.
This FREE event is open to the public. All festivities will take place inside the main museum building.
