Doug Cox and Steve Mitchell of Twenty Fingers truly believe that the spontaneous magic of live performance is the one thing that Artificial Intelligence will never capture. Onstage, typically surrounded by their beloved vintage acoustic instruments, the duo makes a surprisingly big sound–and it’s a buffet of classic 70s country, joyful rural blues, gospel stomp, Newgrass and even Hawaiian music. But the essence of Twenty Fingers is the very obvious love, respect and humorous camaraderie between the old friends, whose very friendship is a story unto itself.

Come prepared to sing, stomp, laugh, and celebrate.

Twenty Fingers
Country, Blues, R&B, Bluegrass and Hawaiian Music with Doug Cox and Steve Mitchell
Renowned Vancouver Island multi-instrumentalist Doug Cox laid down his (name of a vintage guitar) on its case and, with a twinkle in his eye, took a break from soundcheck and turned to his bandmate: “Steve, we’ve known each other for almost 35 years. We’ve been in bands together, but we’ve never been a band together. Just you and me.”
“That’s correct, Doug,” nodded Steve Mitchell after scribbling indecipherably on a musical chart. “And that’s weird. After all, you’re one of Canada’s most highly-regarded dobro and slide guitar players, and I’m a criminally underrated Nashville songwriter who claims to have single-handedly invented Seagrass, a musical sub-genre that nobody else in the world plays.”
“Indeed,” Doug replied. “Let’s do it! But what will we call ourselves?
“How about Ry Cooder?” Steve suggested while injecting himself with an insulin pen. “Or NRBQ?”
Suddenly, an LED light bulb went on above Doug’s head and he immediately swatted it away, shattering it into pieces.
“I’ve got it!” he announced triumphantly. Then, in a sonorous radio voice, Cox spoke the duo’s name into existence: “Ladies and gentlemen, will you please welcome TWENTY FINGERS!!”
“But Doug!” Steve exclaimed in horror. “What if we both lose digits in power tool accidents?” Steve wondered. “What then?!?!”

“He’s his own little orchestra,” says famed Nashville publisher (Taylor Swift, Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts) of Nashville/Vancouver Island singer-songwriter Steve Mitchell, whose live show typically features the performer accompanying himself on hard-driving resophonic guitar, a kick drum, a hi-hat, and occasionally a harmonica–all at the same time.
The sound? Imagine six musical rivers–alternative country, country blues, jazz, Seventies rock, soul, and gospel–all flowing together into one powerful current. Now add intimate storytelling and Mitchell’s often free flowing interpretations of tunes by Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, John Prine and Gram Parsons.
A veteran of the fertile White Rock, BC music scene, Mitchell counts among his musical adventures the short-lived but much loved Vancouver Island folk trio Travels with Charley, his own mid-Nineties alt-country unit Yardsale, as well as a six-year stint in Tom and Kalissa Landa’s Juno Award-winning Paperboys. Working on Nashville’s Music Row, Mitchell has written and co-written charting singles with Canadian and American country artists Maddison Krebs, Craig Wayne Boyd, Danika Portz, Matt Rogers, Kassie DePaiva, Trevor Finlay, Chris Henderson, Alex Runions and Manitoba Indigenous artist Desiree Dorion. He’s also recently toured with In Spite of Ourselves: A Celebration of the Music of John Prine as well as recorded Seagrass: Incidental Ukulele Music for the Salish Sea.

There are world musicians, and there are musicians of the world. In the case of Doug Cox, this extremely talented composer/multi-instrumentalist happens to be both.
As a young bluesman, this devotee of bottleneck slide guitar had a life-transforming moment when he first picked up the Dobro. That eerie, slightly plangent music resonated deep in his soul and changed everything.
Always a gifted guitarist, Doug immediately displayed a special affinity for this most expressive of instruments. His talent and passion proved nearly boundless, and before long he was playing and recording with masters such as Slide Guitar Virtuoso Ellen McIlwaine and Bluegrass Master Musicians Tony Trischka and David Grier. Eventually his musical world expanded to include such diverse virtuosos as Indian slide guitarists Vishwa Mohan and Salil Bhatt, dearly departed bluesman Long John Baldry, guitar slinger Amos Garrett, Songwriter Chuck Brodsky and expat Rwandan The Mighty Popo.
Throughout this time period Doug continued to create music and tour in North America with longtime bandmates, Travels with Charley and Ken Hamm.
His bands and solo recordings display an expansive arc of musical genres, as the folk-blues of Bone Bottle Brass or Steel eventually led to old-timey supergroup Strung (Band of Gypsies – with Tony McManus and April Verch), New Orleans funk (Make A Better World – featuring John Boutte on Vocals), or countrified Americana in company with Austin's BettySoo (Across The Borderline 1 & 2).
Doug has earned innumerable raves, from the BBC’s Bob Harris to magazines such as Guitar Player, he has long been an in-demand player on the Dobro, mandolin, Weissenborn, and the National Steel. His compositions and songs have been featured on many film and TV soundtracks, including Terry Gilliam's Tideland, A&E's Biography, Coyote Ugly, Steven Seagals: Lawman, Auction Kings, Breaking Amish, Call of the Wildman, Chasing Classic Cars, Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations and TV's Duck Dynasty.
Doug was the first featured Dobro player ever to perform at the Montreal Jazz Festival, and the first Canadian invited to play Dobrofest in Trnava in Slovakia, a unique festival set in the birthplace of the Dopyera brothers, the men who invented the Dobro nearly a century ago.
Either as solo performer or as guest artist, as a Producer, or when touring with longtime friends and colleagues, Doug embodies inventiveness and breathtaking musicality. Whether the performance calls for rootsy Americana, New Acoustic, or traditional blues with an African twist, Doug is an intuitive and gracious musical collaborator.
And more than just a performer, Doug is deeply embedded in the entire world of music. Aside from regularly teaching at music camps in Alaska,Slovenia, Texas, Canada and England; he ran his own Malahat Mountain Music label for years and still produces records for the many musical friends he has made along his journey. He is also the long-time producer and artistic director of Vancouver Island MusicFest, which is closing in on its 30th year and has long been one of Canada’s most popular and respected music events.
In 2017, Doug was inducted into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame as a Pioneer Star for his extensive body of work as a musician and producer. In 2018 he was awarded a spot in the Comox Valley Walk of Fame and in 2024 was awarded the lifetime achievement Touring Award of Excellence by the B.C. Touring Council.
Doug has shared a Grammy Nomination for his work on San Antonio band, Los Texmaniacs recent CD and produced a Juno-Nominated CD in Nashville for his friend April Verch, bringing together a who's who of the 'real' country music scene.
When the Pandemic hit in 2019, Doug hunkered down and built a recording studio where he has since produced albums for artist including Wayne Levesque, Argentina's Lisa Rose, Liam Docherty (nominated for the Canadian Maple Blues Award) and others.
During this time, Doug formed a duo with his friend, Nashville Resident, Linda McRae (Cox and McRae) and they made an album together (Produced by Cox), called ‘Beyond the Great Pause’ and toured in Canada. Cox and Mcrae have begun work on their second album and recently signed with American agents, Black Oak Artists. Doug is also Currently musical director for the very popular ‘Songs of John Prine’ and ‘Songs of Paul Simon’ shows that continue to tour in Canada to sold out audiences.
Doug's worked hard on his art and his craft, and you can hear it when he plays. You can also see it, in the names of the artists he's making music with and the places he's played and when you read between those lines, you know he's earned the respect of his peers and a lot of very happy listeners. He is a catalyst among musicians and artists for many fascinating collaborations. What a long, strange – and delightful – trip it continues to be.
Finally, it's 2024, and the world has fully reopened for touring and musical collaborations. Doug Cox is ready. Watch for Doug with his many musical projects coming to a town near you soon!
