This is a full-day steam-hauled rail journey through the Central North Island to Mt Ruapehu. You’ll travel in comfortable heritage carriages with large viewing windows, an open-air viewing platform, and a café carriage onboard. It’s an easy, relaxed way to take in some of the best scenery on the network, from the Kapiti Coast through the Manawatū and across the Mangaweka viaducts.

At Ohakune, you’ll transfer by coach up to Whakapapa Village, where you’ve got a few hours to do your own thing. Grab lunch, take in the alpine views, or add on the Sky Waka gondola for a trip up the mountain.

It’s a long but rewarding day, and a pretty unique way to experience Mt Ruapehu. Ideal for families, groups, or anyone keen on a proper steam day out.
