About the event

Processed Verse Ultra Processed - Hazel Jones

Hazel will be helping us on how to make healthy choices and what to look out for, a topic most of us probably need to understand better.

In recent years, the terms “processed” and “ultra-processed” foods have become buzzwords in nutrition and health discussions. While many people are aware that processed foods are often less healthy, the distinction between “processed” and “ultra-processed” foods is less clear.

By definition, processed foods are any foods that have been altered from their original state. This can include basic preparation methods like washing, cutting, heating, pasteurizing, canning, or freezing. Even refrigeration is considered a form of processing. For example, frozen vegetables, canned beans, and pasteurized milk are all processed foods.

Not all processed foods are unhealthy. In fact, many minimally processed foods retain their nutritional value and can be part of a balanced diet. For instance, frozen fruits and vegetables are often flash-frozen at peak ripeness, preserving their vitamins and minerals.

Ultra-processed foods, on the other hand, are a more concerning category. These foods undergo extensive industrial processing and often contain additives, preservatives, and artificial ingredients. The concept of ultra-processed foods was introduced by Brazilian researcher Carlos A. Monteiro in 2009, who developed the NOVA classification system to categorize foods based on their level of processing. According to NOVA, ultra-processed foods are “industrial formulations with five or more ingredients.” These ingredients often include substances not typically used in home cooking, such as hydrogenated oils, high-fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, and emulsifiers. Examples of ultra-processed foods include sugary cereals, soda, flavored chips, fast food, and packaged snacks.
