The CAT Club presents The Sunday Showdown with . . .
PLAINSONG Live in concert
"Plainsong was the closest the UK ever came to producing a rival to the Flying Burrito Brothers and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. A gloriously harmonic marriage of Olde English Folk, Appalachian Gospel and dustbowl travelogues." Record Collector 2022.
In their short-lived existence, Plainsong only released one album before they split up in 1972. It was universally critically acclaimed:
“Let us not mince words, ‘In Search of Amelia Earhart’ is the finest display of gentle, sometimes liltingly so, English folkiness and rockabilly to surface in a long while. Too long. Not a surprising fact considering Plainsong is the newest project of Iain Matthews, late of Matthews Southern Comfort. Joining Matthews on this album are a trio of fellow band members (Andy Roberts, Dave Richards and Bob Ronga). Plainsong is four English folkies experienced in their method of attack and style. Hopefully In Search of Amelia Earhart is representative of the brilliant recordings forthcoming from this band." Cameron Crowe 1972.
"One of the classic records of 1972, a startingly fine album." Charles Shaar Murray NME.
"In Search of Amelia Earhart kind of sneaks up and insinuates itself into your psyche almost before you begin to notice it. By that time you are hooked by its gentle genius." Karl Dallas Melody Maker 1972.
"Contemporary Folk Album Of The Year. An album of stunning quality." Record Mirror 1972.
The two surviving members, Iain Matthews and Andy Roberts, will be touring the UK in 2025. This follows their acclaimed 2022 tour and the release of one of that year’s best box sets: Plainsong: ‘Following Amelia – The 1972 Recordings & More,’ and a superb biography of the band by Ian Clayton, entitled ‘In Search of Plainsong.’
Happy Trails.
