“For it is in giving that we receive.” — St Francis of Assisi, Peace Prayer
What happens when we move through the world with an open palm instead of a clenched fist? Generosity is more than giving things away; it’s the quiet art of letting our presence become a gift. In a VUCA world (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous), generosity is a counter-culture: a spaciousness that refuses scarcity’s script and remembers abundance as a way of being.
We’ll wander through many levels and states of perception: the felt sense of giving in the body; the stories of the mind that say “there’s not enough”. We’ll hold the bright and the shadow: how excessive giving can mask self-abandonment; how public displays can uplift or distort; how private, quiet offerings feel different. We’ll explore: Can one be truly generous while charging money, or while saying “no”? What is a generous assumption or a generous boundary? What causes generosity to arise? And what are its effects on our nervous systems, our relationships, our communities?
Generosity also asks us to receive. That can be harder. In the mirror of receiving, we meet vulnerability, humility, and trust. We’ll reflect on how giving and receiving are incomplete without the other.
