We are teaming up with our great friends and partners-in-restoration (Journeywork and Wissahickon Restoration Volunteers) to tackle invasive plants in the "old growth woods" section of Harriet Wetherill Park!

Although the surrounding land was cleared for agriculture, these woods were spared because of the rocky, dry outcropping that they're growing on. While not true old growth, some oaks and other trees in this small wooded area are estimated to be ~130+ years old. Locally-rare native plants such as American prickly-ash (Zanthoxylum americanum), Post oak (Quercus stellata), Yellow trout Lily (Erythronium americanum), and Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) are found here. Some of these plants are found nowhere else in Plymouth Meeting!

Over the past 3 years, we've been working to remove invasive English Ivy (Hedera helix), Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonicum), Amur honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii) and other plants to reduce competition for these plants. We've noticed a steady expansion of the tiny bloodroot patch as a result!

Please join us for fun collaboration, warm drinks, and ecological restoration! ?

Please park in the lot off of Butler Pike. Sometimes, typing "Harriet Wetherill Park" into your GPS will lead you to the wrong entrance off Narcissa Road. Use the address 2642 Butler Pike.
