In this one-day workshop, homeschool students in grades 3-8 will dig into the tools writers use to make language vivid, surprising, and memorable: simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, and more. We approach these not as vocabulary terms to memorize but as real techniques that real writers use to pull readers in.
We start with literature. Students read passages from books that use figurative language masterfully, we talk about why it works, and then students try it themselves. The goal is not to produce sentences that check a box but to write something that actually sounds good.

What your student will do:
Analyze figurative language in published books and discuss why the author made those choices. Practice using specific techniques in short, low-stakes writing exercises. Revise their own sentences to add precision, imagery, and energy. Build a personal reference tool they can use in their future writing.

Homeschool students in grades 3-8. Whether your child is just learning what a simile is or already uses them naturally and wants to go deeper, this workshop is designed to challenge writers at multiple levels in the same room.
