Pattern Seeking is an exploration of the quiet, often overlooked moments of everyday life — brilliant gold ginkgo leaves scattered across a sidewalk in autumn, blackberry brambles growing in the backyard, and water lilies encountered on family canoe trips. For artist Winona Salesky, these familiar landscapes become opportunities to slow down and look more closely at nature, shape, color, and repetition. In this body of work, Salesky explores the space between the art of oil painting and the craft of Japanese embroidery. Painted imagery and intricate embroidery exist together within each composition, with stitched elements responding to and emphasizing the repeating patterns found throughout the natural world. The result is work that asks us to reconsider the details we might otherwise pass by — and to see the patterns hiding in plain sight. About Japanese Embroidery Japanese embroidery often begins with an embroidered ground, with intricate designs layered on top to create an almost three-dimensional presence. Threads are twisted by hand specifically for each piece, and individual designs may incorporate multiple layers of silk stitched upon silk. The techniques are taught through a careful, progressive process that can take years to master. Salesky began studying Japanese embroidery in 2012 under the guidance of Judy Jeroy, a certified instructor from the Japanese Embroidery Center in Atlanta, Georgia. About the Artist Winona Salesky is a mixed media artist whose work explores the interplay between nature and design, paint and embroidery. She received her BFA from Alfred University in 1999 and her MLIS from Rutgers University. She has studied Japanese embroidery through the Japanese Embroidery Center in Georgia and continues her work within the tradition. Salesky lives in Northeastern Pennsylvania with her family and a fluctuating number of foster kittens.
