"description": "The Pittsburgh Food Policy Council (PFPC) was founded in 2009 to drive food system change through collaboration with organizations like Penn State Extension, Just Harvest, PASA, Grow Pittsburgh, and East End Food Co-op. Originally a volunteer network, PFPC led key policy wins such as free breakfast in Pittsburgh Public Schools and urban agriculture zoning updates. In 2022, PFPC became an independent 501(c)(3) while maintaining administrative ties with the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies. Its 100+ member network helps shape its direction through working groups and board elections.PFPC has helped pass major policies, including the first Pennsylvania Farm Bill (2019) and the Greater Pittsburgh Food Action Plan (2020). Recent wins include the adoption of the Good Food Purchasing Policy and a county-wide low-income fare pilot. With a USDA Regional Food System Partnership Grant, PFPC is now focused on convening funders, supporting grant writing, expanding partnerships, and scaling the Good Food Purchasing model, culminating in its first Food Summit in 2024."
