HCUAP shares the hemispheric role of urban art, with an emphasis on Latin America and its diaspora, where there has long been a robust mural, graffiti, and street art movement. Visiting artists and scholars come from countries like Mexico, Chile, and Argentina, or cities like Chicago. We created a bilingual coloring book in 2020 that was shared with all 16 branches of the Carnegie Public Libraries Teen Labs called Coloring Across Borders. He says of his work: “I create through illustration, motion graphics, brand design, mural art, and printmaking.My inspiration comes from popular art and stories, struggles, and movements that push us to transform the world around us. For me, every project begins with people —listening, connecting, and understanding— so that the result carries identity, meaning, and a spark of change.” He has given talks in Santiago, Berlin, and Pittsburgh and painted murals all over the world.GloeGloria “Gloe” Talamantes is a first-generation Mexican-American mixed media artist, youth worker, graffiti writer and cultural worker. Her art consists of mural painting, documenting, curating and organizing to promote community building and self-awareness through healing-centered practices. She has self-funded murals across Chicago through the Brown Wall Project, a project created in response to graffiti erasure in Chicago. Gloria has produced public art programming, international mural residencies and exchanges for artists who intentionally work on civic and justice initiatives through arts integration. Gloe has exhibited her work and participated in artist residencies at the University of Chicago’s Art Incubator and the Hyde Park Art Center. She has also created murals, community engagement projects, public speaking engagements and workshops for various institutions and non-profit organization across the country like, the city of Chicago’s Department of Arts and Cultural Events, Columbia College Chicago, Lincoln Park Zoo, Boys and Girls Club of Western PA, Hemispheric Conversations: Urban Art Project (HCUAP), University of Wisconsin and many more. She’s a former artist in residence with the Museum of Contemporary Art’s School Partnership for Art and Civic Engagement (SPACE) and is a Program Director at the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council. Gloria believes that art is a universal language that can be used to learn, grow, and heal.Ish MuhammadIsh Muhammad is a self-taught artist. He earned his BS in Electrical Engineering from Purdue. Born in New York City, Ish has called Indiana home 4+ decades. Muhammad’s work is post-graffiti abstract expressionism. These works have been exhibited nationally and internationally in galleries, museums, murals and site-specific installations. His work has been shown at venues such as: Museum of Graffiti (Wynwood Miami, FL); Indiana State Museum (Indianapolis, IN); Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art (Indianapolis, IN); Chicago Cultural Center (Chicago, IL); Zhou B Art Center (Chicago, IL); Swope Art Museum (Terre Haute); and Maison de Metallos (Paris, France). Public collections of his work includes: MFABoston (Boston, MA); Merge Building (Hammond, IN); VFW Post 509 (Hammond, IN); The Hub (Atlanta, GA); Eskenazi Hospital (Indianapolis, IN); Graffiti Heart (Cleveland, OH); Stockyard Meats (Cleveland, OH); Leeds Public House (Michigan City, MI). He maintains residency at the Lovelace House in Gary, Indiana and a satellite studio in Hammond, IN.
