Wilderness First Aid (16 Hour, Intermediate) This is a two-day course- Saturday AND Sunday 8:00AM-5:00PM with a one hour lunch break. You must attend both days for the 16 Hour (Intermediate) certification. This course is based on the ECSI 6th Edition, Wilderness First Aid and is valid for two years upon completion.
NOTE- These courses are currently open to anyone that is required to have this training to attend Scouts BSA High Adventure, NICA Mountain Bike coaches, Appalachian Mountain Club (or similar,) Camps (as Guides) & anyone in the Scouting community that wants to be prepared for upcoming outdoor adventures of any type (Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc.)
Learn how to manage common injuries and illnesses when definitive medical care is an hour or more away. Successful completion of this course and written test results in a Wilderness First Aid (Intermediate) certification which complies with the Wilderness First Aid requirements for Scouts BSA High Adventure Camps including Philmont Scout Ranch, Sea Base, Northern Tier, and Summit Bechtel Reserve which require at least one person per trek (two per trek at Philmont Scout Ranch) to be current in Wilderness First Aid through one of the BSA’s approved providers. Having more participants trained in Wilderness First Aid skills is highly recommended for any high adventure or backcountry experience.
Participants will learn and demonstrate patient assessment, how to provide effective first aid treatments for common outdoor injuries and illnesses, bleeding control (STOP THE BLEED®,) assembling and maintaining trip specific first aid kits, how to make appropriate evacuation decisions, and more.
Instruction will take place both in the classroom and outdoors regardless of the weather, so be prepared for any condition. Bring your upcoming trip/ activity personal gear (as much as possible suited for your trip or activity) including water (leave water bladders at home,) snacks, lunch, clothing, rain gear, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, tent, first aid kit, etc.
Wear comfortable, weather appropriate clothing; you will be inside and outside, practicing skills that require working on your hands and knees, bending, standing, lifting, and carrying.
