- **Event Description**: The Georgia Black History Trail is a new statewide initiative dedicated to connecting African American historic sites, stories, and landscapes across Georgia. During Black History Month, the Trail is being launched locally through the Chipley Historical Center in partnership with a growing network of historians, educators, and preservation leaders from across the state.

Founded by Whitney Ligon, Cindy Bowen, and Mona Pierce, the Georgia Black History Trail has grown from an idea into a collaborative, statewide effort. Since 2025, more than 190 individuals representing 59 counties have joined the initiative, with 80+ historic sites already submitted for inclusion. Harris County stories and sites will be part of the Trail as it continues to develop.

To mark the Trail’s launch, the Chipley Historical Center will host a Georgia Black History Trail Companion Exhibit, opening Saturday, February 28, 2026, and remaining on view through mid-June 2026.

The exhibit explores African American history at both the local and statewide levels, highlighting themes of resilience, leadership, culture, and community. While it does not attempt to tell every story, it serves as a meaningful starting point for continued research, interpretation, and public engagement.
