- **Event Description**: Explore the wonder of fireflies! Join our presentation & night walk to learn species ID, biology, and how to protect these tiny beacons.About this EventExperience the wonder of fireflies under the stars! Join us at Claremont Nature Centre and explore how fireflies communicate, what makes them glow, and why they’re disappearing. Learn how protecting these tiny beacons of light starts with small actions in your own backyard. We will start indoors with a presentation about the local firefly species and then venture outdoors into the night to oberve the natural light show. This event is intended for Ages 10+:• Beginner level information• Activities and concepts that are friendly for all ages• Intended audience includes youth, adults and seniorsWalk Route/Length: The guided nighttime walk will be roughly 2.5 km (with many stops) on mostly wide open trails, paths and access roads. However, there are a handful of points along the route that narrow. The route is generally level in grade, but it does have some sections on gradual declines/inclines. For the best firefly viewing, we will let our eyes adjust to the night and walk without flashlights. Fireflies are extremely sensitive to light pollution and tend to stop displaying in the presence of artificial light. TRCA is committed to creating an accessible experience for all participants. If you require an accessibility accommodation, please email davidangelo.williams@trca.ca at least 3 days prior to the event. The event will run rain or shine but will be cancelled if there is extreme weather. Registrants will be emailed two hours prior to the event if there is a cancellation. This event is supported by Ontario Power Generation.
