Juneteenth National Freedom Day illuminates the fact that slaves celebrated the abolishment of slavery with excitement and great joy. It is a reminder to all Americans of the status and importance of Americans of African descent as American citizens. For more than 140 years, Juneteenth National Freedom Day has been the oldest African American holiday observed in the United States.
Juneteenth celebrations began in Phoenixville in 2002, experienced a hiedas and returned in to our community in 2021 with a week-long series of virtual events that were educational, entertaining, and inspirational!
This year on Sunday, June 14, between 2 and 6 pm, the Phoenixville Juneteenth Committee (Black Light Projects , Diversity In Action, Orion Communities, The Colonial Theatre, and the Phoenixville Community Health Foundation) has organized a special collection of activities to engage the community and shed light on the importance of African American history in the United States and our community. We will commemorate this important date with historical re-enactors, music, art, dance, drummers, street theater, magic, Soul food, and storytelling. The event will take place on the 200 block of Bridge Street in Phoenixville.
We are continuing our celebration on June 19th and 20th. More information to follow.
