This course provides 40 didactic contact hours and an opportunity to work in the growing field of forensic nursing. This activity has been submitted to the IAFN for approval to award contact hours. The IAFN is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on a Accreditation.
This program is designed for nurses who are interested in providing forensic-medical assessments and care to pediatric victims of sexual assault and are interested in their professional growth and expertise as pediatric nurses. A Sexual Assault Nurses Examiner (SANE) is a registered nurse who has received advanced training and education in the forensic field of sexual assault. SANE's work as part of the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). This multidisciplinary team includes law enforcement, advocates, attorneys, and the SANE. The SANE conducts a medico-legal examination, which includes the collection of forensic evidence from the client. The SANE is also an expert witness and may have to testify in court to the findings of the medico-legal examination.
Course Eligibility: Minimum 3 years' experience as an RN in pediatrics
No cost to attend but you will have to attend on your own time (PTO, days off or approved time off without pay if applicable)
Understand Forensic nursing and sexual violence
Understand the role of the SART/MDT
Understand the role of the advocate and effective communication
Be able to complete a physical exam and assess findings
Understand STI testing with prophylactic treatment; and pregnancy risk with prophylactic treatment
Understand drug facilitated sexual assault with specimen collection
Be able to collect forensic evidence
Be able to take forensic history and complete proper documentation
Perform and understand forensic photographic documentation
Understand the legal considerations and court proceedings
Understand Arizona State and federal laws for pediatric sexual assaults
Space is limited. Priority is being given to our PCH nurses who have an interest in forensic nursing and personal professional growth and development.
