Join us for for an intimate look at selected works from Laura Brubaker's botanical photography collection and discover the remarkable, ingenious, and sometimes surprising strategies native plants use to survive in harsh and rapidly changing environments. Plants are extraordinary mentors, and this talk offers an opportunity to examine some of their finest lessons. 

These are stories of flamboyance and restraint, abundance and patience - one annual invests extravagantly in petals with the spectacle of a burlesque artist, while another may wait several years, as demurely as a postulant, before risking its first flower. Through her work, Laura explores the cycles that dictate the limits of life and the gamble inherent in each plant’s survival strategy. With nature as a mentor, plants have much to teach us about adaptation, risk, timing, and resilience.

Laura will take participants behind the scenes of her unusual creative process, revealing how she layers botanical photographs using mathematical formulas to create intricate abstract and surrealistic landscapes.

This presentation invites audiences to see familiar plants in an entirely new way. Through a blend of art, science, personal observation, and storytelling, often overlooked species reveal not only their beauty, but also their intelligence, their vulnerabilities, and the lessons they offer for creating more resilient landscapes and lives.
