Shophouse Studio Art Gallery at Pteah Chas and Sâmleng (@samleng.arts) are proud to present the first solo exhibition in Cambodia by Khmer American artist Sopheak Sam សំ សភ័ក្ត្រ (@alwazebmybb) — with a special performance preview by Jean-Baptiste Phou (@jb_phou).

Taking its title from the 1982 Culture Club song, this exhibition meditates on desire, absence, and vulnerability — tracing how unsettled sites of pleasure and pain coalesce into something that both wounds and heals.

Developed during a month-long residency with Sâmleng, the exhibition transforms Shophouse Studio Rooftop Gallery into an immersive environment of painting, textile, sculpture, and video. Across canvas, fabric, wood, brick, moving image, and shedding snakeskin, recurring motifs of architectural gates, camouflage, devotional ornamentation, and serpent symbolism emerge and erode.

Snakeskin becomes a metaphor for cycles of shedding, renewal, and return. Gates mark thresholds between past and present, intimacy and distance. And through these material and symbolic encounters, the work dwells within the ways distance, desire, and refusal continue to inhabit bodies shaped by diaspora and postwar histories.

The exhibition also marks a personal return — Pteah Chas was a space the artist first encountered in 2023, one that became a formative gathering place for their queer community in Phnom Penh.
