CIFF is proud to present the international premiere of In Symbiosis, a powerful new documentary by Helena Berndl and Francesco Maria Gallo. This eye-opening film journeys through time and across continents to uncover the true story of food and food security — asking why our health and environment are in decline, and what it will take to break the cycle of ecological collapse. Through the voices of farmers, scientists, and activists from both the Global South and North, the film points toward resilience, justice, and a more sustainable future.

Director Helena Berndl, originally from Austria, brings a rare perspective shaped by both art and science. After moving through theatre, film sets, medical practices, and laboratories, she found her calling in communicating science through cinema with compassion and clarity. A graduate in Neuroscience from UCL in London, she began making films to bridge the gap between research, public understanding, and policy. Together with cinematographer Francesco Maria Gallo, she created In Symbiosis as an independent labour of love, driven by a deep commitment to food systems, social justice, and giving voice to those too often unheard.
