Halfway through Broken Hearts Club, we slow right down for Maborosi, Hirokazu Kore-eda's quietly devastating debut feature. Yumiko, a young Osaka woman, is left inexplicably widowed when her husband walks onto a railway line and is struck by a train, with no apparent motive. Years later, she agrees to an arranged second marriage with a widower and relocates to a remote fishing village on the Sea of Japan, but the unresolved grief of her first love continues to quietly shape everything around her.

Adapted from a Teru Miyamoto novel, Maborosi announced Kore-eda, previously a documentary filmmaker, as a major new voice in Japanese cinema, winning the Golden Osella for Best Cinematography at the 1995 Venice Film Festival. Told almost entirely through long, still, painterly compositions rather than dialogue, it set the template for the tender, restrained studies of family and loss that would define the rest of Kore-eda's career, eventually leading to his Palme d'Or win for Shoplifters over two decades later.
