The Basics of Our Turkey Shoots
A turkey shoot is a competitive shotgun event in which participants aim at targets to compete for prizes—traditionally a frozen turkey. It is important to note that no live turkeys are involved in these events.
Key aspects of typical turkey shoots include:
• Shotguns, primarily 12-gauge or 20-gauge, are used to shoot at paper or cardboard targets.
• Participants are required to bring their own 12-gauge or 20-gauge shotguns.
• Entry fees are commonly $2 per shot to participate in each round.
• Organizers supply shotgun shells to ensure uniformity of ammunition among competitors.
• In each round, shooters fire at designated targets marked with their assigned numbers; scoring is based on accuracy and the number of hits.
• Prizes such as frozen turkeys are awarded to the top scorer of each round.
• The random pattern of shotgun shots makes the outcome largely based on chance, providing an equal opportunity for all participants to win.
• Most turkey shoots serve as fundraising events for clubs or charitable organizations, and are characterized by a welcoming, community-oriented atmosphere.
Turkey shoots are generally held outdoors at sportsmen’s clubs during autumn weekends. The structure of the competition ensures an engaging experience, offering participants multiple opportunities to win.
These events are open to the public and designed to be enjoyable for individuals and families alike.
