Are you interested in helping steward the land and habitat along the South Fork Eel River (SF Eel River) and its tributary Fish Creek? The Watershed Stewards Program (WSP) and Humboldt Redwoods State Park are hosting a Watershed Awareness Volunteer Event (WAVE) in a beautiful redwood grove just upslope of the SF Eel River on Saturday, April 18th from 10am - 2pm and you are invited!We will be using gloves to manually pull up mats of ivy covering the redwood forest floor, and loppers/saws to remove ivy climbing the redwood trees. English Ivy is a fast growing invasive plant that quickly covers large areas, choking out existing native plants, and preventing new native plants from establishing. Removing the ivy from the redwood trees is also essential to prevent the ivy from covering and weakening the redwood trees, and to help reduce the spread of ivy as it creates fruits with seeds that are spread by birds when it reaches sunlight. Let's help make space for native plants that create the riparian habitat salmon and steelhead need to flourish!No experience is neccessary to participate! We reccommend bringing a filled water bottle, sun protection, a hat, pants, a long sleeve shirt, and close-toed shoes. Gloves, tools, extra water, snacks, and pizza will be provided! The event will happen rain or shine!Volunteers will park in a turnout along the Avenue of the Giants near the worksite, with additional parking available on the river bar. Carpooling is strongly encouraged. We have limited space, so please RSVP (60 volunteers max)!
