- **Event Start and End Date**: Sun, 10 May, 2026 at 02:00 pm – Sun, 10 May, 2026 at 04:00 pm (-04:00)
- **Event Description**: Explore the dense history of Philadelphia's historically Jewish neighborhood - 2 miles, 2 hours.About this EventEvent lasts 2 hours. Meet inside Starr Garden playground at 6th and Lombard. Tour ends at 5th and Spruce. From the 1880s through the 1920s the area between Spruce and Christian Street and 2nd and 6th was the Philadelphia equivalent of New York's famous Lower East Side. Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe created a vibrant community with its own Yiddish Theater, literary societies and newspapers, along with synagogues and banks, bath houses and delicatessens. This walk begins with an introduction to early Jewish life in Philadelphia, and then continues to explore the rest of the “Jewish Quarter,” pointing out sites of former bathhouses, shuls, newspapers, theaters, stores, social service buildings, union halls, banks and hospitals, as well as the still-active Society Hill Synagogue and Congregation B'nai Abraham. Hear about the dramatic Kosher butcher strike of 1911, learn about the Jews arrested on Yom Kippur in 1889, hear the ongoing debate over the first hot-dog roll, and discover the true story of the Three Stooges.Jerry Silverman is a certified member of the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides. He earned a Bachelor of Hebrew Literature and a Master of Jewish Education, served as the High School principal of Temple Beth Sholom in Cherry Hill, NJ, as well as the Educational Director of Temple Beth Zion-Beth Israel. "description": "Our Mission\r\n \r\nHidden City Philadelphia is dedicated to exploring Philadelphia’s urban landscape through journalism and public history. \r\n \r\nThe Hidden City Daily, our online publication, acts as a watchdog for historic preservation in Philadelphia. We also delve deeply into architecture, urbanism, photography, public art, city life and Philly history.\r\nOur Hidden City Tours aim to change the way local folks look at familiar places, and to illuminate Philadelphia’s often neglected post-colonial history. Tours range from members-only visits inside extraordinary sites such as the vacant Red Bell Brewery, to walking tours that explore places such as Mt. Moriah Cemetery, the Lost Jewish Quarter, and Subterranean Philadelphia. \r\nOur Story\r\nHidden City Philadelphia grew out of founder Thaddeus Squire’s interest in exploring old estates, churches and factories. He went on to create the Hidden City Festival, which featured site-specific contemporary art and performances at nine obscure or abandoned places, including the Met Opera House and Disston Saw Works. A second festival was held in 2013. Today, Hidden City is a non-profit organization that remains dedicated to connecting local residents to Philadelphia and its history. \r\nMembership: \r\nHidden City Philadelphia relies on the generous support of our members to help fund our journalism. Your support goes directly to pay the writers, photographers and editors of the Hidden City Daily. \r\n \r\nAs a member of Hidden City, you’ll not only support our reporting, you’ll also receive various perks, including discounts on all our tours, invites to members-only tours and, at higher levels, complimentary tickets. If you enjoy reading the Daily, please consider becoming a member today--let's keep exploring Philadelphia together! \r\n \r\nHidden City Philadelphia is a project of CultureTrust Greater Philadelphia, our fiscal sponsor. CultureTrust is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. \r\n "
