Lucy Kaplansky
Lucy Kaplansky began singing as a teenager in Chicago folk clubs before moving to New York City, where she became part of a vibrant songwriter community that included Suzanne Vega, Steve Forbert, The Roches, and Shawn Colvin. Known for her luminous harmonies, she quickly gained attention—The New York Times predicting stardom—but stepped away from music to earn a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. While working in hospitals and private practice, she continued collaborating with friends, singing on Colvin’s Grammy-winning Steady On, albums by Nanci Griffith, film soundtracks, and national commercials. Encouraged back into recording by Colvin and producer Bob Feldman, Lucy signed with Red House Records, released The Tide (1994) to wide acclaim, and soon returned to music full time. Her following albums—including Flesh and Bone, Ten Year Night, and Every Single Day—earned major critical praise and two AFIM awards for Best Pop Album. In 1998 Lucy co-founded the acclaimed folk supergroup Cry Cry Cry with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell, followed later by Red Horse with John Gorka and Eliza Gilkyson. Across a prolific career spanning folk, pop, bluegrass, and acoustic roots music, her albums have explored themes of family, community, love, and loss, including Everyday Street (2018) and Last Days of Summer (2022), praised by NPR as “utterly beautiful and affecting.” In 2025 she released her tenth album, The Lucy Story, a retrospective collection tracing her musical life from her teenage recordings to collaborations with artists such as Shawn Colvin, Dar Williams, and Richard Shindell. Her recording of “More Than This” has surpassed 12 million Spotify streams, and she has appeared on CBS Morning Show, NPR’s All Things Considered, Mountain Stage, and more. Lucy continues to tour internationally, and her album Ten Year Night remains the best-selling release in Red House Records history.
