- **Event Description**: 5 Week Letterpress Workshop at the Soapbox Community Print Shop and Zine Library in West Philadelphia.About this EventThis is 5 consecutive Saturdays from 10:00 am – 1:00pm.Workshop dates are January 10, 17, 24, 31, and February 7.Over the course of several weeks of classes, you will learn to set type, do multi layer registration, and how to print on and clean the Vandercook Universal I with confidence. No experience necessary! If you are interested in using the print shop independently during open hours, this course will give you all the tools you need.Please note: Masks are required for this workshop, regardless of vaccination status. The instructor reserves the right to ask you to leave if you do not comply.About the InstructorBelle Handler is a disabled artist living and practicing on Lenapehoking. Her work and studio practice emerge from the intersection of lived experience with disability, and reproductive print technologies spanning from traditional letterpress printing to contemporary computer-aided design and CNC machining.She is a letterpress fellow and board member at the Soapbox Community Print studio in Philadelphia, and holds a BA in Environmental Studies from Haverford College. As a studio assistant in the Hurford Center's Maker Arts Space, Belle expanded her studio practice to include art education and community-building. Her current work focuses on the history and technology of handset type and the idea that artmaking and printmaking are pivotal resources for disabled communities and individuals.Cost$225 for Current Members of the Soapbox/$250 for Non-MembersAn additional $50 materials fee covers ink and other consumables, paper for an introductory project, and studio maintenance.
