Exploring the Philly Jazz Legacy, 27 April | Event in Philadelphia | AllEvents.in About the event Exploring the Philly Jazz Legacy
Historian Jack McCarthy will share key stories from Philly’s heyday as a jazz mecca in the 1950s and 1960s up until the present.

About this Event

Philly has long been a jazz hub, with cool cats like John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, Jimmy Smith, and Benny Golson calling the city home. Such figures were mainstays in the clubs and concert halls that made up an integral part of the mid-20th century urban landscape. This tour will highlight key locations and stories from Philly’s heyday as a jazz mecca in the 1950s and 1960s up until the present. We’ll begin near the site of the famed Earle Theatre at 11th and Market Streets. From there, we’ll head down South Broad Street, a major club thoroughfare. The tour will end at Broad and Fitzwater Streets. Put some pep in your step and come join the fun!

Tour leader Jack McCarthy is a longtime Philadelphia archivist and historian who specializes in Philadelphia music history. Jack has a master’s degree in music history and regularly lectures, writes, and gives walking tours on the subject. He has directed several Philadelphia music history projects, including major projects for the Philadelphia Orchestra, Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and Mann Music Center, and directed the 2018-2019 project Documenting & Exploring the Philly Jazz Legacy, funded by the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. Jack writes on Philadelphia music history for the Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia and the online magazine Hidden City Philadelphia.

About The Host:
Our Mission   Hidden City Philadelphia is dedicated to exploring Philadelphia’s urban landscape through journalism and public history.    The Hidden City Daily, our online publication, acts as a watchdog for historic preservation in Philadelphia. We also delve deeply into architecture, urbanism, photography, public art, city life and Philly history. Our Hidden City Tours aim to change the way local folks look at familiar places, and to illuminate Philadelphia’s often neglected post-colonial history. Tours range from members-only visits inside extraordinary sites such as the vacant Red Bell Brewery, to walking tours that explore places such as Mt. Moriah Cemetery, the Lost Jewish Quarter, and Subterranean Philadelphia.  Our Story Hidden City Philadelphia grew out of founder Thaddeus Squire’s interest in exploring old estates, churches and factories. He went on to create the Hidden City Festival, which featured site-specific contemporary art and performances at nine obscure or abandoned places, including the Met Opera House and Disston Saw Works. A second festival was held in 2013. Today, Hidden City is a non-profit organization that remains dedicated to connecting local residents to Philadelphia and its history.  Membership:  Hidden City Philadelphia relies on the generous support of our members to help fund our journalism. Your support goes directly to pay the writers, photographers and editors of the Hidden City Daily.    As a member of Hidden City, you’ll not only support our reporting, you’ll also receive various perks, including discounts on all our tours, invites to members-only tours and, at higher levels, complimentary tickets. If you enjoy reading the Daily, please consider becoming a member today--let's keep exploring Philadelphia together!    Hidden City Philadelphia is a project of CultureTrust Greater Philadelphia, our fiscal sponsor. CultureTrust is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
