Panel members will include: William Marrazzo, the President & CEO of region’s leading PBS and NPR affiliate, WHYY, the home of Channel 12 and 91FM. Al Schmidt, President of the Committee of 70, a non-partisan, community based organization dedicated to political transparency, good government and political reform.James Greenwood, a former President of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization, He served six terms as a Republican Congressman from Pennsylvania’s Eighth Congressional District, which is based in suburban Bucks County. A journalist with ten years of experience, Julia Terruso covers Pennsylvania politics for the Philadelphia Inquirer.This program will be presented live in the 4th Floor Skyline Room of the Parkway Central Library on Thursday, October 27th at 7:00 P.M. With light refreshments served at 6:00 pm, all are invited to attend this free program, but tickets are required. For generations, the Free Library of Philadelphia has provided a public square and served as the “convener of community concerns,” so that Philadelphians of every zip code and political perspective may consider, debate and educate themselves about the great national, regional and local issues of the day. Prior to the event, we ask you to consider the following:Are all great nightmares alike? Perhaps not, but they do share one key element in common. The dreamer can always foresee a horrific disaster about to occur, but is powerless to stop it. In the years leading up to the American Civil War, political opponents became enemies. In North and South alike, people no longer saw those on the opposite side of the Mason-Dixon Line as friends, neighbors or fellow citizens. They were simply “The Enemy,” those that the other side sought to destroy.Today, nearly 160 years after the Civil War ended, there are ominous signs that our nation may be in grave peril again. On January 6, 2021, we witnessed an armed insurrection in our capitol. Five people died. This was also the day that 139 members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted to dispute the Electoral College results that confirmed Joseph R. Biden’s election as President of the United States. Now, members of Congress from both political parties are coping with a record number of threats, insults, intimidation, stalking and property damage. The challenges and sacrifices required by public service are difficult enough without forcing elected officials to fear for their lives and the safety of their families.
