And what happens when you put them to the test? Why do myths about lost civilizations, ancient aliens, and so-called “mystery artifacts” persist? What does archaeological science actually reveal about the past? Drawing on Penn Museum collections, we’ll connect popular misconceptions to current research and demonstrates what’s at stake when misinformation replaces real evidence.

In this four-week virtual course, guest instructor Milo Rossi, better known online as Miniminuteman, examines some of the most common pseudoscientific claims about the ancient world, exploring why they are so compelling—and where they fall apart. Weeks 2-4, a Museum expert joins him to show how archaeologists use evidence—from excavation to analysis—to build reliable knowledge about the past.

After this class, you’ll have a deeper understanding of archaeological science, how to evaluate claims about the past, and why evidence-based interpretation matters.
