Join us for a remarkable presentation by conservationist David Bradfield as he shares stories from a decade spent in Afghanistan. David worked to locate and protect the elusive snow leopard while leading field efforts to establish Afghanistan’s first two national parks. During this time Bradfield’s wildlife conservation work was undertaken with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in coordination with U.S. agencies, and the Afghan government. David will share with you his experiences and offer a rare perspective of these globally-recognised programmes and the successes he had in bringing meaningful conservation and more peaceful pursuits to this historically war-torn land. His role at times required negotiating conservation agreements in some of the country’s most remote mountain regions, at times conducting the delicate and often fraught negotiations necessary to work in areas under Taliban influence.

David Bradfield has over 32 years of experience in game reserve and national park management across the state and private sectors in South Africa, East Africa, and Asia. He began his career specializing in black and white rhino protection in South Africa before being recruited by the Frankfurt Zoological Society to assist with the management of Liwonde National Park in Malawi. He later trained former Khmer Rouge rangers in Cambodia’s tropical rainforests. David then spent a decade with the Wildlife Conservation Society in northern and central Afghanistan, where he helped establish protected areas and support the management of national parks. He is currently based in Jejane private nature reserve in the Balule Nature Reserve near Hoedspruit.
