Far Away (2000) is an absurd play about a young woman named Joan, her aunt Harper, and her coworker Todd living in a world at war with itself. Playwright Caryl Churchill offers us three short acts in which these characters reckon with their actions, choices and shifting relationships as the war creeps down the rivers, up the trees, in through the windows and into their very bodies.
Juxtaposing absurdity with familiarity, Churchill investigates how material economies, labour systems and narrative landscapes fuel the state of permanent war. She is one of the most influential modern playwrights of the English language, known for pushing the boundaries of genre and form and for her unflinching commentary on profound socio-political questions that cut through the reactionary 24-hour news cycles of our time. Her unpredictable and often funny dystopian vision asks us to consider if “far away” is really so far away after all.
The performance runs approximately 75 minutes with a short intermission.
Recommended for audiences aged 13+ due to discussion of violence.
FAR AWAY is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc.
