Tonight features Max Bruch's Eight Pieces for Clarinet, Viola, and Piano (Op. 83), performed complete by three exceptional musicians.Bruch wrote these pieces at age 72 for his son Max Felix, a professional clarinettist — among the last major works of his life. The eight movements favour rich, lyrical melodies, Romantic harmonies, and an autumnal depth of expression. The clarinet and viola converse as equals while the piano binds them together.
