When trying to redirect all the artworks into a coherent theme, a futile attempt can only be made as any semblance of trying to imbue it with meaning may mean risking it of losing other associated meanings. The works within the collective exhibition vary in visual nature, meaning, and medium.
Thus, it was decided earlier on not to pigeonhole the exhibition, to give justice to the many diverse traits and characters of the works on show. Similarly, the works can be likened to poetry, where attempts at a definition of poetry is also ultimately futile. Robert Frost, a notable American poet, once said “poetry is what gets lost in translation”. And maybe it is just that, the ‘lost translation’ is what UN_ as an exhibition is offering.
By displaying the works ‘as is’, letting the viewer create their own meanings, many of the works may seem unrealistic, unfinished, ungrounded even. But if we allow ourselves to move beyond the preconceived notion of surface value, we then encounter an unworldly space unfolding. Unbound by normal conventions, and unshackling our minds.
The displayed works are not meant to be seen as a finished piece, but to be viewed as part of a larger process, a continuing journey taken by the respective artists. UN_ is then a reflection point, a mirror; a mediator even between the works and the artist, and between the works and the audience.
Welcome to UN_
