"description": "Darren Peterson is the creator of Take Charge Wellbeing, an organisation focused on equipping people with techniques to help manage their thoughts, feelings and emotions.Darren has spent over 20 years’ working in the heavy industries and has worked in both Metro-based Construction roles and FIFO roles in the Mining and resources sector since emigrating to Australia from Wales in 2011. He understands, first-hand the significant impacts that stress and isolation can have on one’s mental wellbeing and the importance of providing people, particularly men working in Blue-Collar industries with strategies to help manage their wellbeing.Darren has lived experience of anxiety and depression - though at the time, like so many, he could not see it for what was. He has since learnt that these feelings of anxiety or depression are not something to be ignored or pushed aside. Whilst workplaces are providing talks, seminars and booklets or flyers on these issues - 'encouraging us to talk' was the main solution offered. However, Darren found that he and a lot of his co-workers, were reluctant to or incapable of having that kind of conversation with someone else; perhaps because they weren’t yet equipped to have that kind of conversation with themselves. Darren could see this was the missing piece of the puzzle - a desire to be empowered and educated to Take Charge of his wellbeing.Wanting to better understand how to do this, Darren undertook a path of self-education and training, coming to realise that the better he understood himself and the techniques he could use, the better he started to feel.Darren completed training to become a Certified Mindfulness Teacher and completed a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Foundation Course which led him to develop his program, Take Charge Wellbeing. Wanting to be able to provide better support to the people he was meeting and engaging with and be equipped with the knowledge to support people in crisis, Darren undertook Mental Health First Aid training with Mental Health First Aid Australia (MHFA).Finding the course extremely valuable, Darren went on to became a Qualified Instructor of Standard Mental Health First Aid, also with MHFA. It is this education, combined with his lived experience that gives Darren a unique insight and context when delivering the MHFA course and how his passion to help others manage their mental health and wellbeing was ignitedMHFA training can be delivered to a variety of audiences, including to staff as part of orientation and ongoing in-service training. MHFA training can provide staff with skills and knowledge to assist their fellow co-workers and/or clients when they are experiencing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. You will be able to take comfort in being involved with an innovative program that is well regarded by the community that has receivedrecognition nationally and overseas. MHFA has solid evidence for its effectiveness from randomised controlled trials and qualitative studies.Evaluationshave consistently shown that MHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses and their treatments, knowledge of appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness.Darren endeavours to create a safe and interactive learning environment during his courses and can modify his teaching style to cater to a variety of audiences.
