Pregnant, penniless, and abandoned by her boyfriend, Connie Doyle (Ricki Lake) finds herself alone on a train when a chance encounter with a kind pregnant stranger, Patricia Winterbourne, leads to an extraordinary case of mistaken identity following a tragic train accident. Waking in hospital, Connie is mistaken for the deceased Patricia by the wealthy, grieving Winterbourne family, who believe she is their son's widow and the mother of their long-awaited grandchild. As Connie is drawn deeper into the Winterbournes' opulent world, embraced by the warm, welcoming family and gradually falling for her supposed brother-in-law Bill (Brian Kerwin), she must reckon with the deception she's perpetuating and decide whether to reveal the truth before it destroys the genuine connection and sense of belonging she's found.

Director Richard Benjamin delivers a warm, old-fashioned romantic comedy that draws inspiration from classic Hollywood mistaken-identity plots while grounding the fantasy in genuine emotional stakes. Ricki Lake brings likeable vulnerability to Connie, balancing the character's guilt over her deception with a genuine yearning for family and stability that makes her sympathetic despite the ethical murkiness of her situation. Shirley MacLaine brings warmth and gravitas as the Winterbourne matriarch, while Brian Kerwin's earnest charm makes the central romance believable. The film's gentle, fairy-tale sensibility and its focus on found family and second chances gives the classic mistaken-identity premise genuine emotional resonance, resulting in a comfort-viewing romantic comedy that trades cynicism for old-fashioned sincerity.

Original format and audio experience of this film faithfully reproduced by The Revival House. Presented in 35mm film unless noted otherwise.
