In 1957 Maine, during the height of Cold War paranoia, nine-year-old Hogarth Hughes discovers a giant metal robot in the forest near his home. The fifty-foot creation has crash-landed from space with no memory of its origins, and Hogarth takes it upon himself to hide and protect the innocent creature he names the Iron Giant (voiced by Vin Diesel). With help from beatnik junkyard artist Dean McCoppin (Harry Connick Jr.), Hogarth teaches the Giant about life, death, and what it means to choose who you want to be. But when a paranoid government agent named Kent Mansley (Christopher McDonald) arrives in town investigating reports of the robot, the situation escalates. The army, believing the Giant to be a Soviet weapon, prepares to destroy it—and Mansley is willing to launch a nuclear missile at the small town to eliminate the threat. The Giant must decide whether to embrace its apparent design as a weapon or prove it can be something more.

Director Brad Bird's 1999 masterpiece is one of animation's greatest achievements, a film that works as Cold War parable, boy-and-his-dog story, and meditation on identity and choice. The hand-drawn characters interact seamlessly with the CGI Giant, whose expressive design makes him instantly lovable despite his imposing size. Bird fills the film with visual storytelling brilliance—the Giant's eyes changing from gentle circles to angry red targeting systems, the subtle 1950s production design, the economical character animation. Michael Kamen's score perfectly captures both wonder and devastating emotion. What elevates the film beyond nostalgia is its sincere examination of fear, violence, and the choice to be "Superman" rather than a gun. The climax delivers genuine tears alongside thrilling spectacle. Warner Bros. botched its initial release, but the film has rightfully achieved its status as an animated classic.

Original format and audio experience of this film faithfully reproduced by The Revival House. Presented in 35mm film unless noted otherwise.
