On behalf of APIS WA and Philosophy at UWA, we are pleased to announce the date for the 2025 Perth Philosothon, which will be held in the ARTS Building on the beautiful campus of the University of Western Australia. WA Secondary Schools are invited to register a team of 5 students to participate - there is no expectation that students will have studied Philosophy and Ethics before or after participating in the Philosothon.
Teams: Each school may register a team of 5 participants, one from each year level, 7-11 (plus a maximum of 2 reserves).
Facilitators: Each school will need to provide a teacher who will act as a Facilitator on the night. Please get in touch with us if you have any questions about this role or if this will be a barrier to your school competing and we can see what we can do to assist you.
Schedule: There will be 3 discussion rounds, 2 with students from the same year level and 1 with students from mixed year levels.
Each discussion round will use a community of inquiry methodology, with students contributing to constructive discussion on a determined philosophical question or topic based on stimulus materials.
Stimulus material will be provided for the first two rounds, but the third round will be live. That is, students will receive the stimulus and be given 15 minutes to think it over, before embarking on the discussion. This worked well last year encouraging high level critical and creative thinking engagement, moving students away from providing rote and rehearsed responses.
Prizes: 1st โ 3rd place: School and Individual for each Year Level; Most Promising and Most Creative Philosopher
