Step into the shadows of the early 20th century and discover the bold, rebellious spirit that shaped Iowa’s liquor legacy.
Join Iowa historical fiction writer Ann Hanigan Kotz on March 27th at 6:30 pm for Iowa’s Prohibition & Bootlegging Legacy, an engaging journey through the eight times the state of Iowa limited or banned alcohol and the determined Iowans who made it happen.
Ann begins with a sweeping overview of Iowa’s complicated relationship with alcohol before plunging into the dramatic stories that defined the era: the tarring of an official by the Iowa City Beer Mafia, the shocking murder of a pastor in Sioux City, and the rumrunning operations that made Templeton infamous for its rye whiskey. Along the way, you’ll gain insight into why Iowa became a whiskey making powerhouse during Prohibition and learn the how and where behind the state’s thriving illegal enterprise. Ann concludes by connecting past to present, exploring the modern echoes of today’s underground whiskey scene.
The evening includes a guided tasting of three Iowa rye whiskeys, thoughtfully paired with charcuterie appetizers. A cash bar will also be available.
Tickets are $35 plus applicable sales tax and may be purchased by calling (515) 465-3511 or by stopping into Hotel Pattee at 1112 Willis Ave. Copies of Ann Hanigan Kotz’s book will be available for purchase following the program.
This event is for guests 21 years of age and older.
