SYNOPSIS:
The musical blends Victor Hugo’s original 1831 novel with the beloved 1996 Disney animated film. Unlike the movie, the stage version is more dramatic and mature, leaning closer to Hugo’s darker themes while retaining the sweeping Alan Menken/Stephen Schwartz score. Set in 15th-century Paris, the story revolves around Quasimodo, the deformed but kind-hearted bell-ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral, who longs for freedom beyond the bells and towers. His guardian, Archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, is torn between religious devotion and forbidden desire. When Quasimodo encounters the compassionate and spirited Esmeralda, their lives intertwine with that of the dashing soldier Captain Phoebus, leading to a struggle of love, freedom, faith, and morality which is set against the grandeur and tragedy of Notre Dame.
