SYNOPSIS:
James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone's favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, modern classic. The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results. The Tony Award-winning book and score are both enchanting and touching.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
ROLES AVAILABLE (7 MALE ROLES, 12 FEMALE ROLES):
NARRATOR/MYSTERIOUS MAN: One actor to portray two roles: an intellectual and pleasant
story-teller, and a mischievous vagrant and nosy meddler.
THE WITCH: She’s not good, she’s not nice, she’s just right. The obsessive protector of Rapunzel who is straightforward and aggressive. She also undergoes a startling transformation.
BAKER: A harried and insecure baker who is simple and loving, yet protective of his family. He is willing to do anything to ensure his family’s happiness, but refuses to let others fight his battles.
BAKER’S WIFE: Determined and bright woman who wishes to be a mother. She leads a simple yet satisfying life and is very low-maintenance yet proactive.
CINDERELLA: The earnest maiden who is constantly mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters.
JACK: The feckless Giant killer who is adventurous, naive, energetic, and bright-eyed.
LITTLE RED: A bratty young girl who is strong-willed, quick-witted and fearless, yet youthful and naive.
CINDERELLA’S PRINCE/WOLF: One actor to portray two roles: The Prince: is vain and gorgeous, a disloyal lover who is currently searching for the next new, exciting thing. The Wolf is a hungry and insatiable hunter who takes advantage of the weak by misleading and captivating his prey.
RAPUNZEL: A loopy-but-lovely maiden who is sheltered by the Witch and terribly lonely. She yearns to experience the world
RAPUNZEL’S PRINCE: Just as vain and gorgeous as his Prince brother, he is always chasing the newest, most exiting endeavor.
JACK’S MOTHER: Jack's protective mother who is bold and strong-willed.
CINDERELLA’S STEPMOTHER: The mean-spirited, demanding stepmother of Cinderella.
FLORINDA and LUCINDA: Cinderella's stepsisters who are black of heart and follow in their mother's footsteps.
CINDERELLA’S FATHER: Out of touch with his family but harmless and well-meaning.
RED’S GRANNY/CINDERELLA’S MOTHER: One actress to portray these two roles: Red’s Granny is tough and feisty. Cinderella’s Mother is deceased, with her soul guarding and aiding her daughter from a tree.
STEWARD: A man-servant whose only care is to please his master or the strongest personality in the room. Conniving, callous and cowardly.
SLEEPING PRINCESSES/ENSEMBLE: These two actresses will be responsible for many of the smaller roles and effects that appear in the woods. They also sing in ensemble numbers. Near the end of the show, they will “glow up” to become Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.
IMPORTANT NOTE: In an effort to keep Corn Stock a safe space for minors, it is the theatre’s policy to conduct a background check for all volunteers. If you are cast in the production, Corn Stock will need your full legal name, email address, and phone number before rehearsals can proceed. An outside company (InquireHire) performs all background checks by sending you an email and/or text message with a link to fill out the necessary background check form. All information is sent through a secure server and CST sees none of your information. Background checks only flag crimes against children and no other records. Casting will be made official pending a successful background check.
