The challenge researchers face is tracing how a change at one scale propagates to the others; how a malfunctioning receptor becomes a symptom; or how a drug acting on that receptor changes what a patient feels and does. That gap limits everything downstream, from which treatments get developed to how disorders are diagnosed. Lilianne R. Mujica-Parodi, a computational neuroscientist and the director of the Laboratory for Computational Neurodiagnostics at Stony Brook University, will discuss how the computational platform Neuroblox takes an engineer’s approach, making it possible to close that gap. Through testing drugs and neuromodulation devices in silico, which in biology and other experimental sciences refers to an experiment performed on a computer or via computer simulation software, Mujica-Parodi will share how in silico experiments are done before they reach patients: fitting a digital twin to an individual patient's data; and building robotic control systems that learn and adapt as brains do.In addition to leading the Laboratory for Computational Neurodiagnostics at Stony Brook, Mujica-Parodi is the Baszucki Endowed Chair of Metabolic Neuroscience, a professor of Biomedical Engineering, and a member of the Laufer Center for Physical and Quantitative Biology. She is additionally a neuroscientist in the Department of Radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, a Research Affiliate at MIT, and an external faculty member at the Santa Fe Institute. She is also the CEO of Neuroblox, Inc., the university’s spinout startup. Mujica-Parodi’s work focuses on building mechanistic, multi-scale models of the brain to advance the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders. Her research applies and extends control theory to the allostatic regulation of neural circuits and their interactions with the body's metabolic and physiological systems.
