Rezwana Choudhury Banya is an internationally acclaimed exponent of Rabindra Sangeet, the musical compositions of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. With a career spanning over four decades, she is celebrated for her soulful voice, masterful interpretation, and unwavering dedication to preserving and promoting Tagore’s legacy across the world.
A direct disciple of legendary maestros Kanika Bandyopadhyay and Nilima Sen, Banya’s musical training was rooted in Santiniketan, the university founded by Tagore himself. There, she absorbed not only the nuances of Rabindra Sangeet but also the spiritual and philosophical depth embedded in the art form.
She is the founder of Shurer Dhara, a premier music institution in Dhaka, Bangladesh, which has been instrumental in training generations of students in the authentic rendition of Rabindra Sangeet. Her unique blend of scholarly depth and emotive delivery has made her a cultural icon in both Bangladesh and India, as well as among the global Bengali diaspora.
Banya has performed in some of the world’s most prestigious venues and festivals, receiving accolades and honours for her contribution to the arts. Her discography includes numerous critically acclaimed albums, and her performances continue to move audiences with their grace, purity, and profound emotional resonance.
In recognition of her immense contribution to Bengali music and culture, Rezwana Choudhury Banya has been honoured with numerous national and international awards, including the Ekushey Padak, one of Bangladesh’s highest civilian honours.
