These practices are sometimes called 'racialisation' and they marked wide areas of social life. They were supported by knowledge from a variety of sources: medical, legal, and religious.In this lecture, Professor Miri Rubin will present 'a fragment of that tapestry of knowledge', by introducing discussions of blackness conducted by medieval scholars - Jews and Christians - in their commentaries on Song of Songs 1:5: 'I am black and/but beautiful'.About the speaker is Professor of Medieval and Early Modern History at Queen Mary University of London. She is an historian of the religious cultures of Europe, 1000-1600 with particular interests in urban life, relations between religious communities. She pursues these interests with concepts learnt from literary, anthropological, and gendered approaches. She also enjoys sharing history with diverse audiences.
