There will be a brief meeting open to all those interested in helping coordinate growth of the Pelham Alumni Association immediately after breakfast at 10:00 in the PHS Library.  

Location: Pelham High School Cafeteria.  Parking in the Student Lot, south of the school.  Please be aware of the Pelham Invitational Track Meet on Harris Field that day

Suggested Donation: $10 per person


The History of  "The Feast of Pancakes"

John Butler and his wife Elizabeth were probably the first permanent settlers in Pelham NH. This is a story about two of their children, Jacob and Phebe. One evening in April, 1727 their two children, Jacob, then 9, and Phebe, age 12, went into the woods to figure out where the local pigeons roosted at night. Phebe waited for Jacob at a spruce swamp, but Jacob did not appear. Phebe waited as long as she dared. Then as darkness fell, Phebe found her way home to the Butler’s log house. John and Elizabeth, of course, immediately set out in search of young Jacob. 


Jacob, meanwhile, was lost in the woods, unable to find either his sister or his way home. In the darkness, he found an old hollow tree that had fallen down. He crept inside feet first to protect himself from wild beasts and to be able to crawl back out in an emergency. At one point, he did hear the search party “hallooing.” When he leapt up, he saw their search lanterns, but they were too far off. So Jacob crept back into the log and lay there until morning. 


No one knows how he eventually found his way home, but when he did, his parents rejoiced, and his mom made him a great big pile of pancakes. Jacob found them so delicious that for the rest of his life, on the same day of April every year, he would have the same pile of pancakes. And he marked the day in his calendar as the “Feast of Pancakes.”
