The 4-Week Intermediate Pottery Clay Class is specially designed to teach you the following (please see the agenda for a full breakdown and details of each week):
Our goal in this class is to expand your clay education by elevating your ceramic pieces while keeping the vibe and atmosphere fun and inviting. This class is perfect for anyone who has had at least one beginner wheel-throwing pottery class, hand-building class, or some combination of the two and is interested in exploring new possibilities and forms. This 4-week course will meet every Tuesday starting February 3rd, with the last class being held on the 24th. There is one make-up session per person per class if you are sick or life gets in the way. Please email us if you need to reschedule, and we will work with you to coordinate a new date. :)
Check out the agenda section next for a breakdown of what we have planned for each week. Visit our events page for a full list of fall happenings :)
All classes and workshops are open to anyone over the age of 10 years old, any person under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Note: Shahane will be the instructor! She has taught pottery since 2016, got her BFA in ceramic arts in 2015 with a double minor in art history and psychology, and owns Pudgy's Place with her husband Phillip :)
Address: Pudgy's Place, 119R Foster St. Bldg. 13 Unit 1E, Peabody MA, 01960
Info: Week 1: First, we are going to start with a refresher and then a demo on how to throw collard and enclosed forms! With enclosed forms, you can learn how to make luminaries, lids, and more complex sculpted elements.
Info: Week 2: A quick recap and then a new demo on how to throw pieces within a piece. This can be a chip/dip dish or a double-walled form. + Throw-a-thon! Create to your heart's content, as this is the last day for any new pieces to be made on the wheel. You'll still be given pointers, refreshers, guidance, and encouragement! :)
Info: Week 3: Trimming and finishing all pieces! We will go more in-depth on the balance between interior and exterior form and how to match them in the trimming phase. REMINDER: Fun tricks with angling the tools in different ways are introduced here as well. Additions and Alterations :) Once you have a trimmed piece, it takes on new life and possibilities. While your forms are still leather hard (in between completely bone dry and wet), it's the best time to add any additions, such as handles for mugs, sculpted elements, and so forth. The leather hard stage is also when we carve out designs and/or accentuate textures.
Info: Week 4: The final day of this session - glaze, glaze, glaze it all! We will go over the basics of glazing and some cool alterations and tricks. Glaze is the top coat on pottery that makes it functional for everyday use :) *NOTE: none of our glazes have toxic or dangerous minerals. If you'd like to continue taking classes we encourage you to visit our events page or website to see our current offerings! If you'd like to continue independently join our multimedia studio Pudgy's Place as a member! :) *Pieces glazed today will have to be picked up the following week or can be shipped to you for an additional fee.
