- **Event Name**: Stargazing Lecture - Do Electrons Spin?
- **Event Start and End Date**: Fri, 21 Aug, 2026 at 08:00 pm (-07:00)
- **Event Description**: What exactly is an electron--is it a tiny particle, a wave, or something else entirely? What does quantum mechanics really tell us about the nature of an electron? Join us for a lecture by Caltech Professor of Philosophy Chip Sebens as he discusses these topics and more. This presentation will be followed by a panel Q&A consisting of several astrophysicists and philosophers to answer your questions about astronomy, physics, and the philosophy of science.

This public astronomy event will be hosted both in-person as well as live-streamed over YouTube Live. The lecture will be 30 minutes, followed by a 90-minute session of telescope-aided stargazing and a Q&A Panel consisting of experts in the department on a variety of astronomy and astrophysical topics. You can attend in person or interact with us through the YouTube interface. Event is free and open to all, no reservations necessary.

Title: Do Electrons Spin?
Lecturer: Chip Sebens
Abstract: Though physics has made great progress, basic questions about what is going on inside an atom remain open. We know that atoms are made of protons, neutrons, and electrons. But, what exactly is an electron? According to one picture, the electron is a tiny (perhaps point-sized) particle that moves around the atom's nucleus. Because the electron acts in some ways like a spinning charged body, it is said to have a property called “spin.” However, it does not actually rotate (like a spinning top). According to a second picture, the electron is a swirling cloud of energy and charge. The electron truly spins. Examining this debate will take us on a tour through classical electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, quantum field theory, and the philosophy of physics.
