Pasadena City College (PCC) presents STEM Saturdays - hands-on fun experiments in a college classroom for high school studentsAbout this EventThese workshops will be led by PCC faculty and student mentors dedicated to providing you with an enriching experience.Observe and interpret rocks and fossils, fly a drone, and explore jobs in earth sciences. In one part of the day’s activities, you will explore careers in Geography and GIS, try out geographic data collection tools, and fly a drone to capture aerial imagery of the PCC campus! In the other part of the day’s activities, you will observe and interpret rocks and fossils from the three successive time intervals of the Miocene Epoch (23 - 5 million years ago) of southern California. During the Miocene (prior to the evolutionary origin of humans), the ocean flooded into the Central Valley, the highly productive California coastal ecosystem with kelp forests first appeared, and major mountain ranges of southern California first began to rise (e.g. the San Gabriel, San Bernardino, Santa Ynez, and Santa Monica Mountain Ranges). At the end of this activity, you will prepare and take home a fossiliferous limestone hand sample from the late Miocene Santa Margarita Formation!This FREE EVENT is for high school students (one parent/guardian per student is welcome to join). There is no cost to attend but space is limited - register early! Register for as many Saturdays as you’d like.The event begins at 9am and ends at noon. Make sure to arrive 10 minutes early to check-in for the event.An official registration packet will be sent prior to each STEM Saturday event via email.FAQsWhere do I drop-off my student or park for the event?Parking for attendees is available in PCC Parking Lot 5, entered on Bonnie Ave.For student drop-off, the drop-off site is located near Lot 7 by the Free Campus shuttle stop location; enter on Bonnie Avenue. To get to the E building where the event takes place, you will walk by the library on your right hand side.Click here for a map of the PCC campus.Will my student be chaperoned at all times during the event?PCC faculty and student mentors will be present in the classroom area the whole time. PCC is not liable for students who decide to wander away from the event.Will food be served as part of the event?No food or drinks will be available at the event.
