A Summer of Nova Scotian Stories

Join us for a weekly reading series celebrating the stories, histories, and landscapes of Nova Scotia. Each session features a book by a regional or locally connected author, exploring themes of Mi’kmaw family history, women’s community care, fossils, rural art, and the power of place.

Featured Sessions

June 23 — Opening Gathering 
Welcome, introductions, and a preview of the summer’s themes.

June 30: No gathering due to Canada Day preparations.

July 7 — The Spoon Stealer • Lesley Crewe 
Family, resilience, and humour across generations.

July 14 — Come to the Window • Howard Norman
Memory, place, and the uncanny, with ties to the Parrsboro Shore.

July 21 & 28 — The Berry Pickers • Amanda Peters
Mi’kmaw family history, loss, and healing across time and place.

August 4 — The Fossil Hunters of Sydney Mines • JoAnn Yhard 
A YA adventure rooted in Cape Breton’s geological heritage. Includes a reading by the author.

August 11 — Brighten the Corner Where You Are • Carol Bruneau 
Art, creativity, and the everyday lives of rural Nova Scotian women.

August 18 & 25 — The Birth House • Ami McKay 
Women’s agency, midwifery, and community care in early 20th century Nova Scotia.
