Site Info:

Lake Parramatta is of both ecological and historical significance to the Sydney area.

Historically to first nations peoples as a bountiful crossroads between northern and south/western groups. To settlers as a region that supported the early stages of european settlement when, for the primary settlement in Sydney, survival depended on acquiring resources needed to support the colony. It is from this area, most of greater Sydney was discovered / settled and supported in the early years, including the Blue Mountains :) (via growth in the Hawkesbury and Camden areas.

Ecologically, it stands at a key boundary between the western clay dominated plains, the northern sandstone hills and some shale/alluvial communities to add more spice to the mix. Diversity abounds in fauna and especially flora. Aquatically, unfortunately we are unlikely to see turtle which were once abundant in the lake. However, amongst the exotic species, i'm sure there is still some eels from which Parramatta derives it's name.
