Birding Trip to Fort Boise WMA

Registration is required to attend this event as space is limited. Please make sure ALL fields in the registration form are completed and that a confirmation email is received.

Join Golden Eagle Audubon and Southwestern Idaho Birder's Assocation on a special caravanning day trip to Fort Boise Wildlife Management Area. The Fort Boise WMA is a unique 1,542 acre reserve at the confluence of the Boise and Snake Rivers. Once an important stop along the Oregon Trail, Fort Boise is now a protected area for nesting water fowl and home to a variety of waterfowl on their spring migration. Species we'll be on the lookout for include Sandhill Cranes, white-fronted geese, pintails, goldeneye, pheasants, songbirds, hawks, and eagles.

We hope to arrive the WMA just before thousands of Snow Geese fly in for the morning. We'll then move out to the Snake River for a short walk. Next stop is the Martin's Landing section of the WMA for another walk and more birding along the Snake River. Those who wish may continue with us on to the Roswell Marsh Habitat Area, a 135-acre wetlands complex. People who are not available for the full day can break off at any time if they have their own vehicle and no other group passengers.

Accessibility: This trip requires moderate hiking and is not suited for those with limited mobility. This field trip is not wheelchair accessible.

Birding Skill Level: All levels of birders welcome, but you may enjoy your time more if you have some experience. Binoculars will be available if needed.

Age: Participants younger than 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and participants younger than 18 must have a parent/guardian sign the liability release.

Time: 8:00am - 2:00pm. Check-in is at 7:50am. Please arrive at check-in, as we will leave promptly at 8:00am.

: St Luke's Meridian West in the Park and Ride lot. Turn onto Allen St E from the light at Eagle Rd, and immediately make your first right. The Park and Ride is the first parking lot on the right. If you'd prefer to meet us at Fort Boise at 9:00am, please email trip leader Jim ahead of time. (Click on "Meeting Place" to get directions from your location.)

This trip will be limited to 6 cars. Must be willing to carpool.

What to Bring: Layers for Weather, sun protection, insect repellant, closed-toe shoes, binoculars, a scope if you have one, a chair, water, lunch, snacks, an auto with a full tank of gas. A scope will be available for the group to share. No dogs please.

Restroom Availability: Restrooms will be available.

Inclement Weather: If there is an unhealthy AQI or steady precipitation forecast, the trip will be cancelled.
